Waiheke winning on diverting inorganic waste from landfill

Orapiu inorganic collection bookings closing soon - book now and get your summer clean out underway

Published: Thursday 13 February 2020

Auckland Council’s inorganic collection service is proving popular with Waiheke Islanders this season.

Since bookings opened in October 2019, 1286 bookings have been made. Local Board Chair Cath Handley says it looks as though demand will easily outstrip last year’s total of 1702 bookings as people in some areas still have another two and a half months to book their collection.

“With the island setting its sights firmly on a zero waste future, it’s great to see people booking their inorganic collection, knowing that we’re working hard as a community to re-use, re-purpose and upcycle everything we can through The Free Shop at Tahi Road and other recycling services.

Since collections began in November in Surfdale, more than 6 tonnes of steel have been recovered and sent to specialist metal recyclers. A further 5.16 tonnes of materials have been diverted for re-use and upcycling.

“We’re really pleased to see that over 42 per cent of what we’ve collected has been diverted from landfill,” says Cath Handley. “The inorganics collection team will continue to work hard to increase diversion rates by the end of the season. The results we’re achieving are setting the bar for the rest of the Auckland region.”

Orapiu households should get in now and reserve their place before bookings close at midnight on 23 February.  Collections for Orapiu will be completed over March 2020.  All collections for Waiheke residents will be concluded by 29 May.  Further booking deadline details are below:

Important things to remember about your inorganic collection

There is a one cubic metre limit (the equivalent of a small trailer load) for your on-property collection.  We’ve put together a helpful list of the items you can put out.  If you have more than one cubic metre of items, consider donating those in good condition to a local charity store or reuse shop.  Remember, leaving unwanted items on the kerb or roadside is a form of illegal dumping.
